Azerbaijani President Promises to Do Utmost for Further Improvement of Statehood, Democracy and Economy

Azerbaijan, Baku, 24 October / Trend corr. J.Babayeva/ Azerbaijani President will do his utmost for further improvement of statehood, democracy and economy in the country.

"I promise to the Azerbaijani nation to remain loyal to Heydar Aliyev's policy, which I took over five years ago and which meets all interests of the Azerbaijani people. Owing to this policy Azerbaijan strengthened its independence and stability was established in the country," Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijani President said at the inauguration ceremony in Baku on 24 October.

The ceremony took place at the Heydar Aliyev Palace, main concert hall of Baku.

Azerbaijani President swore with his hand on the Constitution of the Azerbaijan Republic and Koran.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, head of the Russian Presidential Office Sergey Naryshkin, head of the Polish Presidential Office Peter Kovnatsky, First Vice-President of the Turkish Government Camil Cicek, Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Konstantin Eliseev were in attendance.

On 22 October, the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan approved of the results of the 15 October presidential election.

As a result of the election, Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), President Ilham Aliyev won the election in a landslide - 88.73% of votes.

Igbal Agazade, chairman of opposition Umid Party won 2.86%, Fazil Gazanfaroglu, chairman of Great Establishment Party - 2.47%, Gudrat Hasanguliyev, chairman of Unified Popular Front Party - 2.28%, independent candidate Gulamhuseyn Alibayli - 2.23%, Fuad Aliyev, chairman of Liberal Democrat Party - 0.78% and Hafiz Hajiyev, chairman of Muasir Musavat Party - 0.65%.

Ilham Aliyev, the fourth President of Azerbaijan, was born in Baku on 24 December 1961 as the son of renowned political figure Heydar Aliyev. After completing school in Baku, Aliyev attended Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), receiving a PhD in history, before starting to teach at MGIMO. In 1991-1994, Aliyev was engaged in entrepreneurship and was the Director General of a commercial company in Moscow.

Aliyev was appointed Vice-President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) in 1994 and its First Vice-President in 1996. On 4 August 2003, Aliyev was promoted to Prime Minister position. He was twice elected MP of the Azerbaijani Parliament. Since 1997, Aliyev has been leading the National Olympic Committee. In October 2003, Aliyev was elected President of Azerbaijan for the first term of office.
