Opposition Protest Action Launched before Parliament

Georgia, Tbilisi, 7 November / Trend corr.N.Kirtskhalia/ The supporters of the unified Georgian opposition launched a protest action in front of the Parliament. It is dedicated to the events of 7 November 2007, when the authorities dispersed a peace manifestation.

About 3,000 people have gathered in front of the Parliament. At the beginning of the action, the leader of the unified opposition Levan Gachechiladze called on the road police to block the Rustaveli Avenue, for the action had been authorized by the city's authority. The requirement was fulfilled.

The opposition demands early presidential and parliamentary elections; liberation of political prisoners; freedom to media and return of the Imedi TV company to the family of Patarkatseshvili; improvement of the election legislation.

According to Kakha Kukava, an initiator of the action, the demonstration will last one day "if no provocation takes place". "The action will be of peace character and then will develop into a procession," he said.

The procession will start from nearby the Parliament to end nearby the Presidential Residency, where a petition with the requirements of the opposition will be submitted to the authorities, he added.
