Azerbaijan Makes Major Contribution to Ensuring Security in South Caucasus, Says NATO Secretary General

Azerbaijan, Baku, 10 Dec / Trend corr. J.Babayeva/ A meeting between Elmar Mammadyarov, the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, and Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the NATO Secretary General, focused on issues of ensuring security in South Caucasus, fulfillment of Activity Plan of individual partnership, as well as the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The Secretary General of the Alliance expressed his gratitude to official Baku for contribution to ensuring security in South Caucasus and generally in Euro Atlantic space, the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan reported. He highly assessed Azerbaijan's fulfillment Activity Plan of individual partnership at the meeting, as well. The sides have been satisfied with level of political dialogue.

Cooperation between Azerbaijan, who is one of sides of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and NATO have been established on the base of a framework document - program on Partnership for Peace, signed on 4 May in 1994. An official document, specifying concrete directions of interaction under the program, was signed in Apr 1996. At present Azerbaijan is fulfilling about 50 partnership tasks in line with the program on Partnership for Peace.
