Azerbaijan’s opposition parties to hold unauthorized protest action

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 15/ Trend , I. Alizade/ Union for Democracy, composed of Azerbaijan's opposition parties, have decided to hold unauthorized protest action in front of the Iranian embassy.

"We plan to hold a protest action in front of the Iranian embassy on Dec. 18 as a sign of protest against repressions against Azeris living in the South Azerbaijan. If the Baku City Administration does not give us permission, we will hold a protest action in front of the embassy on Dec. 31, Solidarity Day of World Azerbaijanis," Ahmad Oruj, chief of Azadlig party, part of the Union, said.

According to the unofficial reports, there are nearly 35 million Azerbaijanis in the South Azerbaijan. Recently, there has been a rise in the facts of repression, imprisonment of various terms and torture by the Iranian authorities against Azerbaijanis in Iran.

In Nov., the Union for Democracy requested Iran's embassy in Azerbaijan to issue a statement about repression against Azerbaijanis in Iran. As the embassy did not reply, the Union has decided to stage a protest action in front of the embassy.

Oruj said the protest action will also involve Azerbaijan National Independence Party (ANIP) and World Congress of Azerbaijanis.

Union for Democracy was founded by the opposition Classic Popular Front Party, Azadlig party and National Democracy Party after 2005 parliamentary election. Great Azerbaijan Party joined the union in early Sept. 2008 and People's Party - in Nov. The Union is advisory and cooperation body.
