Russia plays special role in Iran’s foreign policy, says speaker

in development of relations with a big neighbour - Russia, Speaker of the
Iranian Parliament said at a meeting with the chairman of the Russia-Iran inter-parliamentary
Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani noted a high level of cooperation between Russia and Iran in various fields, including politics, economy, technology and culture, and said that Russia plays a special role in the foreign policy of Iran, according to Tehran-based Trend correspondent.
"There is great potential for development of ties between the two countries. All means should be used to develop long-term relations between Iran and Russia," said Larijani.
Larijani voiced his hope that the Russia-Iran inter-parliamentary friendship group would further develop the relations between the two nations.
"The situation in the region, particularly in Afghanistan, shows that Russia and Iran should strengthen bilateral cooperation in the region and at international level," he said.
"Western countries do
not want Iran and Russia to cooperate, but both countries should implement
joint projects in oil, gas, technical, industrial and economic spheres, using
the world economic crisis in their own interests," urged the Speaker.
Larijani said that construction of the Bushehr nuclear station would be completed soon, and hoped that bilateral nuclear cooperation would grow.
"The State Duma of Russia
supports the development of cooperation between the two countries," said Hafiz
Salehov, chairman of the Russia-Iran inter-parliamentary friendship group.
According to Salehov, Russia will carry out new work to complete building of the Bushehr nuclear station in the near future.
He suggested that Iran's parliament endorsed execution of joint aircraft production contracts signed between Russia and Iran.
Salehov extended to the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani State Duma's official invitation to visit Moscow.
