Georgia, Tbilisi, Jan. 12 / Trend , N,Kirtskhalia /

In response to demands for snap elections, Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava said that every penny in the state budget "must be spent on the population's needs during the global economic crisis - not on politicians."

Elections are costly, he said. Elections were held twice in 2008 and local elections are scheduled for 2010. As a result, additional elections cannot be approved, he added.

Ugulava said some political entities would be displeased with his statement, but added that the government would safeguard the population at all costs and not run around in circles.
