A new Knesset under the leadership of the right Likud party will have a negative impact on the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. So, the EU should lay down terms for the future Israeli government concerning negotiations with Palestinians, Palestinian EU delegation deputy head Adil Atiyya told Trend ."If Likud heads the government, that will shatter idea of creating two states [ Israel and Palestine]," Atiyya said in a telephone conversation from Brussels.
"Palestinians want the EU to take measures against future Israeli government, if it does not respect terms of the armistice," he said. Parliamentary election is over in Israel. Now, leading parties Kadima and Likud have to hold tough negotiations to form a coalition. Though Likud headed by Beniamin Netanyahu remained behind Tzipi Livni's party by only one vote, Israelis believe Likud together with Avigdor Lieberman's far-right party Israel Our Home and other small right-wing parties will make majority in the new government. Israel Our Home gained 15 seats. Netanyahu and Lieberman want to end the peace process between Israel and Palestinian Autonomy. Both parties criticized Kadima's actions to halt offensive in Gaza against Hamas. During election campaign Netanyahu stated that Hamas must be completely destroyed and a truce is out of the question. On Jan. 18, Israel withdrew troops from Gaza and declared a unilateral cease-fire after 22 days of air and ground attacks on Hamas infrastructure. Operation Cast Lead left 1,300 Palestinians dead and over 5,500 injured. Palestinian Administration head Mahmoud Abbas said that Palestinians are ready to negotiate with any Israeli Government. However, Palestine realizes that Israeli Government led by right wing will stop the peace process, said Atiyya. Therefore, the EU must lay down terms for Israel, like Palestinians have done when forming national government, he added.
In 2005, the EU laid down three terms for the newly formed national government of Palestine, where Hamas representatives entered: to recognize Israel's right for exsisting, to continue talks and admit all documents that were earlier signed between the Palestine Liberation Organization and Israel.
"Now, we demand the EU to lay down analogues terms for Israel, if the further government will not respect the truce process," Atiyya said over phone from Brussels.
The main terms in solution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which was made at the conference in Annapolis in 2007, was to stop construction of Jewish settlements on the West bank and forming terms to establish an independent Palestinian state.
The EU still has not made any statement on the results of the elections in Israel.
After the armed conflict in Gaza was finished, the EU's main demand from the Palestinian Autonomy was to promote truce by continuing negotiations, regardless of replacement in the government.
If Israeli's first bloc will head the government, then the EU and Israeli negotiations to extend the cooperation would be stopped, as the Europeans will not cooperate with those who does not respect the terms of the truce, Palestinian diplomat Atiyya said.
"The EU position is not yet known. However, we hope that the Europeans will take measures against the future Israeli government [right bloc] that does not respect the rights of Palestinians," Atiyya added.
