Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 18 / Trend , A.Huseynbala/
An Azerbaijani opposition agitation group on referendum will not hold unauthorized demonstrations during agitation campaign.
"If the Baku City Administration does permit to hold demonstrations at places offered by us, we should not hold unauthorized demonstrations," Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP) Chairman Sardar Jalaloglu told Trend on Feb. 18.
The referendum campaign will begin Feb. 18 and end March 16 at midnight.
Azerbaijan will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend the Constitution.
The CEC registered the New Azerbaijan Party, Shahar, Tereggi, Huquq Va Demokratiya, Vatandash Jamiyyati, For Long-Term Development, Zaka, Movement For Karabakh and the Republic and Republicans initiative groups. The Abad Kand, Azad Soz, Azerbaijan People's Republic and Milli Istiglal initiative groups failed to pass registration.
The Azerbaijani Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.
Jalaloglu said that this campaign aims to amend and change the Constitution. "That's why, we should not draw people on unauthorized demonstrations," he said. "If the Baku City Administration offers an acceptable place to us, we can hold a demonstration there."
Jalaloglu said that nobody will blame them, if a demonstration scheduled for Feb. 22 does not take place. "This is a referendum, but a struggle for the power. Therefore, it is not necessary to hold unauthorized actions," Jalaloglu said.
The National Front Party, Citizen and Development, Liberal, ADP, Musavat and Umid Party, as well as several non-governmental organizations established the Civil Movement for Republic and Garabag initiative group.
Parties and organizations represented in the movement applied to the Baku City Administration to receive a place to hold action on Feb. 22. The letter comprised the following places: an area in front of the Narimanov cinema, area in front of the Mashadi Azizbayov monument, Huseyn Javid square and Samad Vurgun garden, or any place located 200 meters of the Presidential Administration.
