Russia calls Turkmenistan for canceling visa regime
Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, March 23 / Trend G. Hasanov /
The Russian Federation's government calls Turkmen authority for canceling visa regime introduced in 1999 to stir up bilateral cooperation and establish business partnership, Russian media outlets reported on March 23.
Russia and Turkmenistan are connected by long-term contract on Turkmen gas supplies by Gazprom OJSC.
Many Russian companies willing to participate in joint projects failed because of long visa registration by Turkmen side.
By simplification of visa regime, all problems, including double citizenship would remove at the second plan and would not hamper normal interrelations, the experts said.
Russia and Turkmenistan should simplify visa regime with a prospect of its complete cancellation, Victor Zubkov, the first deputy prime minister of the Russian Federation, said. "Visa problems require cardinal settlement given increasing level and scales of our inter-state and business cooperation. I think we should achieve simplification of visa regime with a prospect of its complete cancellation as soon as possible," Zubkov said at the meeting of Russian-Turkmen Economic Forum on March 23.
Turkmenistan left the Visa Free Agreement with all CIS countries in 1999. But Turkey has recently cancelled visa regime for Turkmen citizens unilaterally. Afterwards trade relations greatly revived.
It is necessary for both countries to stir up operations on increase of air transportation volumes, as well as activities of sea and rail road communication, Zubkov said. These issues will be discussed during upcoming Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov's visit to Russia.
