Azerbaijan, Baku, March 30 / Trend , A. Huseynbala/

European leftist parties will discuss the pressures faced by Azerbaijanis in northern Iran at a conference. Azerbaijan refers to northern Iran as "South Azerbaijan."

"Representatives of all European leftist parties will attend the conference. We will circulate documents about events in the South Azerbaijan," South Azerbaijan Forum Chairman and Azerbaijani National Independence Party head Etibar Mammadov said.

There are 35 million Azerbaijanis in South Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijanis have been subject to repression and torture recently.

Mammadov said Azerbaijanis living in European countries will also attend the conference in Warsaw in late April.

"We want the international community to learn about these recent incidents and take concrete measures," he said.

"We have not yet met with the Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan to discuss the persecution and pressures our compatriots face," Azadliq party Chairman Ahmad Oruj said.

Azadliq is part of the Union for Democracy launched by the opposition.

He said the embassy promised to meet with union member parties in December 2008. The embassy has not fulfilled its promise, he added.

"Moreover, no official position on these violations in the South Azerbaijan has been announced on behalf of the Iranian embassy or Iranian ambassador," Oruj said.

He said they will appeal to the international community and Iranian embassy in Azerbaijan again on this issue.

The Union for Democracy was founded by the opposition Classic Popular Front Party, Azadlig party and National Democracy Party after the 2005 parliamentary elections.
