Iran's Football Federation (IFF) has agreed to the US request to hold two friendly matches between the two countries' national soccer squads, Press TV reported.

"We are interested in holding friendly matches against the United States," said the IFF president Ali Kafashian on Tuesday.

"The first leg of the match will be held in the Iranian capital Tehran and the second leg in the US," he added.

The exact date of the matches will be determined after Iran's World Cup qualifiers.

Iranian sports officials said that the Iran-US matches must be approved by the International Council of Iranian Physical Education.

"The US women's national soccer team has also expressed readiness to play against the Iranian women's squad in Tehran. We are considering the issue at the moment," he explained.

The US and Iranian national soccer teams played as a part of the World Cup in 1998 in France. Iran defeated the United States 2-1 in a thrilling encounter at the game.

Iran and the US have not had diplomatic relations since Washington severed ties with Tehran in 1980.
