The Georgian Foreign Ministry expressed its dissatisfaction with the construction of a military airfield in the Ikoti village of the Tzkhinvali's Akhalgori region. The ministry reported that the construction of the airfield near the historical monument - Muhranbatoni 8-century palace, where the nunnery is located is inadmissible.
"The construction and operation of a military airfield poses a serious threat to this historical monument and other historical monuments," the report says.
The Foreign Ministry urged the international community to use all opportunities available to "stop the deliberate destruction of historical monuments and heritage of culture."
The Foreign Ministry also said that Russia, when constructing a military airfield, violates commitments made by the Ceasefire Agreement, dated Aug. 12, 2008, and recalls the responsibility under international agreements for the destruction of historical monuments.
