The night of Nov. 9, 1989 was the realized dream, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Nov. 9 in Berlin.
"The night of Nov. 9, 1989 was the realized dream. Many have played a role in this regard, but it would not be possible without the courage of people from former East Germany," said the Chancellor.
Germany celebrates the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall collapsed on Nov. 9, 1989. As part of celebrations, are held various activities, including worship, exhibitions, concerts, literary readings dedicated to the anniversary date.
Distinguished guests from all over the world are expected to participate in the celebrations.
On Nov. 9, 1989 under the influence of mass popular demonstrations, the GDR government lifted restrictions on communication with West Berlin, and on July 1, 1990, completely removed border controls. During January - November 1990, all border facilities were removed, except the stretch of 1.3 km, which was left as a monument to one of the most famous symbols of the Cold War.
