Municipal elections to be democratic in Azerbaijan: Presidential Administration Department Head

The Azerbaijani authorities state the municipal elections will be democratic.

"We hope the municipal elections will meet the standards and the election institutions will succeed to hold normal elections," Trend quoted Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Social and Political Department Head Ali Hasanov as saying today.

Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for December 23. About 15,682 members are expected to be elected for 1,718 municipalities.

Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004.

Azerbaijan has registered about 32,000 candidates for municipal members. Candidates from 18 political parties have been registered for elections. Candidates refer to 30 political parties.

Hasanov noted that, the pre-electoral situation is normal in the country.
