The appeals deadline has ended for local observers who will monitor the municipal elections in Azerbaijan.

"Yesterday evening, the appeals deadline to the commission of local observers who will monitor the municipal elections ended," Press Service head of the Central Elections Commission (CEC) Azer Sariyev told Trend today.

The CEC and constituencies have registered 36,000 observers who will monitor the municipal elections.

The Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for Dec. 23. About 15,682 members are expected to be elected for 1,718 municipalities.

Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004.

Azerbaijan has registered about 32,000 candidates for municipal members. Candidates from 18 political parties have been registered for elections. Candidates are members of roughly 30 political parties.

According to Sariyev, appeals received by the CEC will be examined over five days.

"The CEC receives appeals in connection with the registration of observers, which will be received until the evening of Dec. 18," Sariyev said.
