Azerbaijani Parliamentary Deputy Speaker Bahar Muradova has appraised the situation in the country in the run up to the municipal elections.

"I appreciate preparations for the elections," Muradova told journalists today." The country has provided all conditions stipulated by the law for the election campaign of candidates for the municipalities."

Muradova voiced her confidence that elections will be transparent, free and democratic.

Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for December 23, 2009. About 15,682 members are planned to be elected to 1,718 municipalities. 

Azerbaijan has registered about 32,000 candidates for municipal members. Candidates from 18 political parties have been registered for elections. Candidates refer to 30 political parties.

Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004.
