Elections for the Upper Chamber of the Uzbek parliament will be held in Uzbekistan on Jan. 18-23, the Uzbek Central Election Commission press service said. 

The press service reminded that according to article 50 - "Elections to Oliy Majlis of the Uzbek Republic" - senate members are elected equally; six people from the Karakalpakstan Republic, the regions and Tashkent. The elections are held via secret voting at joint meetings with MPs from authoritative state bodies of the regions and the cities.

Moreover, about 16 members of the senate with great practical experience and special merits in art, science, literature etc are appointed by the Uzbek president.

It was reported that as a result of the elections for the Lower Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis held on Dec.27, 2009 and the re-voting held on Jan.10, 2010, about 150 MPs of four political parties and the Uzbek Ecological Movement were elected in 39 constituencies.

The bicameral parliament in Uzbekistan was formed in 2005. Over 100 MPs work in the upper house of the Legislative Chamber from 2010. They were elected for five-year terms.
