Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos praised the EU mission's work in Georgia.

"We support this mission and support the continuation and extension of the observers' mandate," Moratinos said in Tbilisi at a joint press conference with Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze today.

He stressed that the EU is constantly engaged in talks with Moscow to expand its mandate in the occupied territories, but now in vain.

"Despite this, the mission plays a stabilizing role in the conflict zones and contributes trust between the parties, although the expansion of the mandate of the EU would do it better," Moratinos said.

He stressed that the Georgian authorities are satisfied with the EU mission's work and supports extending its activities in the country.

"We will recommend the adoption of this decision by the EU," Moratinos said.

Vashadze noted that "it is necessary to increase pressure on Russia to expand the mandate." But even in these circumstances, the mission plays an important stabilizing role," he said.
