Azerbaijan wants a permanent U.S. ambassador to be appointed soon, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told journalists at a press conference today.
"This issue is within the competence of the U.S. Administration, and Washington decides who to appoint and when," the minister said.
According to Mammadyarov, there is no ambassador not only in Azerbaijan, but also in other countries.
"Of course, we would like the U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan to be appointed in the near future," Mammadyarov said.
The U.S. ambassador's post is vacant since July 2009, when former ambassador Anne Derse left her post.
Touching upon bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the United States, the minister said that they are sufficiently broad.
"Over the past 20 years, a lot has been done in terms of the development of these relations," Mammadyarov said.
