Festivities dedicated to the Nowruz spring holiday took place in Tashkent today. Uzbek President Islam Karimov attended the events.

The celebration of the holiday was postponed for the first time due to bad weather.

The president said that Nowruz symbolizes the coming of spring and revival of nature. It is an integral part of Uzbek culture.

Nowruz is now widely celebrated throughout the country with the participation of representatives of various nations.

The U.N. proclaimed this year March 21 as the International Day of Nowruz.

"It fills all of us with pride," Karimov said.

After the presidential speech, a theatrical performance reflecting the folk customs and modern life of Uzbekistan was organized. Pop stars and young singers perform songs of spring, love and the motherland.
