Turkmenistan conducts preparation for an international conference on disarmament in
Central Asia and the Caspian region, an official Turkmen source reported.
According to him, at this stage, the experts of foreign ministries of
Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will hold consultations. The discussed issues also include the format of participants, organizational and protocol issues.
According to the plan, the event is scheduled for the first half of 2010. The Initiative of official Ashgabat to hold a forum that can take place in the first half of 2010 was voiced by the President of Turkmenistan
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the 64th session of UN General Assembly in September 2009.
As expected, the conference will focus on three main areas:
- Review and analysis of the situation with disarmament issues in Central Asia and the Caspian basin;
- The importance of the international legal framework and problems of its further improvement;
- The role of international organizations in addressing issues of disarmament.
