The U.S. Embassy welcomes Matthew Bryza's nomination as U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Embassy Spokesman Terry Davidson told journalists.

President Obama nominated Matthew Bryza as U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

"We believe President Obama has chosen a very experienced diplomat, who knows the region," Davidson said.

He said one can not definitely say that Bryza will be ambassador, as Bryza's appointment must be confirmed by the US Senate. "We do not yet know the exact date of the Senate's decision on the matter, but it should happen in the next few weeks," Davidson said.

Regarding the absence of U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan for a long time, Davidson said it could not be considered as a signal from the U.S., as Azerbaijan has always been a partner in the region to the United States.
