OSCE chairman begins Turkmenistan visit

OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Kazakh State Secretary and Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev will visit Ashgabat today, Kazakh Foreign Ministry Ilyas Omarov told Trend.

"Saudabayev is expected to meet with Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov, Cabinet of Ministers Vice Chairman and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Parliamentary Speaker Akja Nurberdiyeva," Omraov side. "A wide range of bilateral issues will be discussed, including deepening trade and economic relations, cooperating in transit transport and fuel and energy, and working in the framework of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea."

He added that Saudabayev will also attend the International Conference on Disarmament Issues in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin.

"Participants will consider many issues, reviewing and analyzing the disarmament situation in Central Asia and the Caspian region," Omarov stressed.

Omarov said foreign ministers from throughout the region were invited to the event together with senior officials and the heads of international organizations.

Diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan were established Oct. 5, 1992. The countries have signed 65 agrements.

Berdimuhammedov's visit to Kazakhstan May 28-29, 2007 gave an impetus to the countries' bilateral ties. The parties discussed deepening mutually beneficial trade and economic relations in oil, gas and transport.
