Turkmenistan may open new possibilities for the fuller realization of its peacekeeping capabilities, UN Secretary-General's High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Sergio de Queiroz Duarte said at his meeting with Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov.

In turn, Berdimuhammedov expressed "sincere appreciation for UN's support  to Turkmenistan's initiatives, including initiative on the reduction arsenal of mass destruction weapons in the region", the Turkmen governmental press-service reported.

"Pursuing peaceful foreign policy, Turkmenistan was able to use a permanent positive neutrality status delegated by the UN member states ... to fully promote peace, stability and security globally," Berdimuhammedov said.

Berdimuhammedov named opening of the fundamentally new structure of the UN - UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat as the evidence of this.

The sides exchanged views on prospects for further cooperation between Turkmenistan and UN.

'I am very pleased to participate in this Ashgabat conference on Disarmament Issues in Central Asia and Caspian Basin. In my opinion, this is a very timely and important initiative, " Duarte said.
