Azerbaijan, Baku, July 8 / Trend M. Aliyev /

Drivers in Azerbaijan will be able to use their mobile phones while driving via special devices after recent legislative amendments, Interior Ministry Traffic Police Department spokesman Kamran Aliyev told Trend.

At an extraordinary parliamentary session in late June, amendments were adopted to the law on traffic regulations. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on the law in early July. According to one amendment, drivers will be fined 50 manat for using their mobile phone while driving.

"It is difficult for drivers to maneuver in extreme situations if they have their mobile phone in their hands," the spokesperson said. "Handsfree, bluetooth devices allow drivers to talk over the phone without taking their hands off the wheel."

Aliyev noted that the amendments do not apply to emergency vehicles. The amendments will come into force in the near future.
