Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 24 / Trend M.Aliyev /

A pluralistic press plays a special role in democratic elections, OSCE Baku Office head Ali Bilge Cankorel said today at an event dedicated to the role of the media in covering elections.

Cankorel expressed confidence that steps will be made to increase the role of the media in the upcoming parliamentary elections this fall compared to previous years.

The OSCE has proposed amending the Electoral Code to ensure that all media have an equal opportunity to cover the electoral process.

According to the code, the Azerbaijani National Broadcasting Council creates the necessary conditions to ensure election coverage on television, Cankorel said. However, he added that private television channels should also devote more time to the political campaigns.

Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for Nov. 7. Previous elections were held in November 2005. Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies
