Azerbaijan, Baku, September 28 / Trend K. Zarbaliyeva /

Two men suspected of seriously injuring Azerbaijani pop singer Faig Agayev and his two bodyguards in a knife attack in Baku on Monday have been detained.

Thirty-two year old Rufat Melikov and Seymur Mammadov, also 32, were detained on suspicion of attacking the state-honored singer and his bodyguards and documents have been sent to the Nizami district court, the Nizami district Police Department investigator Jovdat Iskandarov told Trend.

Passengers in an Audi, registered 10-FA-222 and driven by Agayev, got into an argument with the driver and passengers of the VAZ-2107 in the Nasimi district of Baku on the morning of Sept. 27.

According to a preliminary version of events, the cause of dispute was the reluctance of drivers to give way to each other. Agayev and his two bodyguards were seriously injured as a result of the incident.

Iskandarov said that mother-of-two Natavan Sharifova was involved in the incident but was released after questioning. The investigation has revealed no information about her involvement in the crime.

Melikov, earlier convicted for premeditated murder, voluntarily surrendered to the police.

A criminal case has been filed under Articles 126.2.1 of the Criminal Code ("Deliberate causing of serious harm to health, that is harm dangerous to human life, concerning two or more persons, and also repeatedly or by group of persons, on preliminary arrangement by group of persons, by organized group or criminal community [organization]"); and 126.2.4 ("Deliberate causing of serious harm to health, that is harm dangerous to human life; hooliganism"). An investigation is underway.
