A number of the Georgian NGOs are planning to hold a large-scale rally in front of the Parliament to protest a draft new Constitution. The rally is scheduled for Oct.1, at 12:00, NGO 'Human Rights-Priority' Chairman Liya Mukhashavria said.
The rally is initiated by the NGOs 'Human Rights-Priority', 'Save Life', 'Coalition for the civic development', 'House of Free Thought', 'Network of the Caucasus' women' and "Lawyer's union. Conservative Party member Lasha Chkhartishvili, People's Party member Alexander Shalamberidze and Leader of the social movement 'Solidarity with illegal imprisonment' Eka Beselia supported the initiative.
The initiators of the campaign believe "the new draft Constitution contains a danger for the country. In this regard, they have already submitted appeals to the European structures and collected signatures demanding to end the discussion of the new Constitution at the parliament.
"Today, the Georgian parliament is going to adopt the draft Constitution at the second reading and activity of NGOs and the Georgian public is very important on this day. The parliamentarians should be aware that we express our protest against the new draft Constitution," Mukhashavria said.
"There is a danger that after the adoption of the new Constitution, there will be a civil strife and the danger is real," she said. "We demand the withdrawal of the draft from the parliament. The discussion should not continue, because it is dangerous for our country."
