Azerbaijan, Baku, October 1 / Trend /

The Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan is improving and modernizing, prosecutor Zakir Garalov has written in the Azerbaijan newspaper on the occasion of their professional holiday on Friday.

The "State modernization program of the Azerbaijani Prosecution General's Office for 2009-2011" dated Sept. 27, 2008 has special importance for the improvement of the prosecution service, Garalov said.

"The State Program demonstrates great confidence of the president in prosecutors. It was adopted to improve the activity and structure of the prosecution service, enhance staff, create a new generation of prosecutors, enhance their professionalism, strengthen the material and technical base of the service, and enhance the social protection of its employees," the article says.

The state program initiated a new phase of improvement, development, and comprehensive modernization of the prosecution service, Garalov said.

"Implementation of the actions envisaged by the program has created a comprehensive basis to increase the role of prosecutors in the development of the legal system, improve mutual activity with other law enforcement agencies in combating crime and conducting investigations, establish information and communication systems, improve the professionalism in the protection of the public prosecution service, expand international relations, and strengthen social protection for prosecutors and improve logistics prosecution," the article said.

Garalov said that the Anti-Corruption Department under the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office submitted 265 criminal cases against 480 people in 2005-2009.

The cases were mostly related to bribery, abuse of power, and embezzlement.

The Attorney General said that there is a trend of consistent reduction in crimes associated with premeditated murder in Azerbaijan. The number of crimes decreased by 4.3 times in 2009 compared to 1992 and 1.5 times compared to 1999.

National Leader and former president, the late Heydar Aliyev, decreed in 1998, that Oct. 1 would be celebrated as a holiday for prosecutors.

The national prosecutor's office was founded in 1918.
