Construction of a new nuclear power plant in Armenia may become serious threats to the environment of the region, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov said in Geneva at a meeting with the Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Jan Kubis, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's press center reported.

Construction of a new nuclear power plant in Armenia may become serious threats to the environment of the region, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov said in Geneva at a meeting with the Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Jan Kubis, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's press center reported.

The deputy minister expressed Azerbaijan's concern over the construction of a new nuclear power station in Armenia and said that the new nuclear power station constructed on the basis of old one - Metsamor nuclear power station would be a source of serious threats to the environment and socio-economic situation in the region.

The sides emphasized the high level of cooperation within this organization, successful activity in the fields of energy, transportation, environment, customs, information-communication technologies, trade and other spheres within the UN Economic Commission, as well as importance of the elaboration of the new projects in the different spheres of economy and development of cooperation in this direction.

Also the meeting was attended by Azerbaijan's permanent representative to the Geneva office and other international organizations of UN, ambassador M.Najafbeyli.
