At least seven people were killed and dozens injured in clashes between African Union peacekeepers and insurgents in the Somali capital Mogadishu Saturday, broadcaster Al Jazeera reported.
The report quoted unnamed sources saying the death toll from the latest round of fighting between the AU troops and the Islamist Al- Shabaab group was expected to rise.
The latest available UN figures show than 12,000 people have fled Mogadishu over the last four weeks alone as AU forces and insurgents battle for control of the capital.
Around 6,000 AU troops from Uganda and Burundi are supporting Somalia's weak Western-backed government. Al-Shabaab, which has links to al-Qaeda, controls most of central and southern Somalia.
