Lithuanian FM and chairmen of Azerbaijani parliamentary commissions discuss bilateral relations

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Azubalis met Samad Seyidov, chairman of the parliamentary commission of Azerbaijan on international relations and inter-parliamentary ties and Ali Huseynov, chairman of the commission on legal issues, in Vilnius on October 4, official website of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry reported.

The meeting participants discussed strengthening of bilateral relations, EU's cooperation with Azerbaijan, the problem of protracted conflicts in the South Caucasus region and other important issues of bilateral cooperation and international policy

The parties stressed the successful cooperation between Lithuania and Azerbaijan in the implementation of bilateral projects under the twinning program of the EU in the field of parliamentary government and combating corruption.

Azerbaijani deputies highly appreciated Lithuania's experience adding that they consider Lithuania to be a strong and reliable partner for Azerbaijan's integration with Euro-Atlantic structures.

At the meeting, Foreign Minister of Lithuania Azubalis stressed the need to further strengthen bilateral economic relations. Despite that Azerbaijan is the main trade partner of Lithuania in the South Caucasus, it is necessary to increase the volume of bilateral trade in the future.

According to the Lithuanian Department of Statistics, the bilateral trade over the seven months of 2010 increased by 10.4 percent compared with the same period of 2009. Lithuania's exports to Azerbaijan in this period grew by more than 29.5 percent. A trade house of Lithuania was opened in the capital of Azerbaijan in September last year.
