On Tuesday, the second working day of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) autumn session, elections of PACE Secretary General were held.

On Tuesday, the second working day of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) autumn session, elections of PACE Secretary General were held. On the ballot, which was attended by 246 MPs, a Pole Wojciech Sawicki was elected by 151 votes in favour. To win the election 122 votes were needed.

Voting results were announced by the President of PACE Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Since May 2006 Sawicki has served as a deputy for the Secretary General of the Assembly. The new secretary-general is elected for a five-year term starting on 1 February 2011.

July 12 Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe presented to PACE a list of two candidates for the post of Secretary General: Sawicki and Dutchman Jan Kleijssen. Kleijssen is working in the Directorate General of Human Rights and Legal Affairs of the  Council of Europe since May 2007.

The current PACE Secretary General is Mateo Sorinas, who was elected on Oct. 4, 2005 and assumed his post on Feb. 1, 2006.
