Iran has declared it is ready to establish permanent secretariat of Convention on the Caspian Sea Environment Protection, also called Tehran Convention, in the country, the Iranian Isna news agency quoted the vice president of Environmental Protection Organization for Conventions and International Affairs, Majid Shafiepour, as saying.

The Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea was signed in Tehran in 2003 by five littoral states. The objective of this Convention is the protection of the Caspian environment from all sources of pollution including the protection, preservation, restoration and sustainable and rational use of the biological resources of the Caspian Sea. A Conference of the Parties was established under the document. The Conference of the Parties shall hold ordinary meetings at regular intervals to be determined by the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties. Extraordinary meetings of the Conference of the Parties shall be held at such other times as may be deemed necessary by the Conference of the Parties, or at the written request of any Party provided that it is supported by at least two other Contracting Parties.

The temporary secretariat of the convection is now in Geneva.

He went on to say that the permanent secretariat of the convention is to be decided on in a meeting to be held on Nov.24-26.

"Among the five countries, Iran is the best option in order to become a "home" for the permanent secretariat of the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea. We hope that we will succeed," Shafiepour added.

The Framework Convention entered into force on 12 August 2006.
