Georgian opposition leader: U.S. supports holding of democratic elections in Georgia

The United States supports the holding of free and democratic elections in Georgia, "Our Georgia - Free Democrats" Party Leader Irakliy Alasaniya said today after meeting with a delegation of the U.S. Atlantic Council.

The United States supports the holding of free and democratic elections in Georgia, "Our Georgia - Free Democrats" Party Leader Irakliy Alasaniya said today after meeting with a delegation of the U.S. Atlantic Council.

"This organization studies the situation in Georgia, the strength of democratic institutions and democracy in the country," he said.

Alasaniya also stressed that the Atlantic Council is engaged in studying the conditions necessary to enhance Georgia's security. "The U.S. will provide the necessary assistance to Georgia to strengthen democracy and enhance the country's security based on this council's expert assessment," he said.

During the meeting, the party noted the need for fair elections. "The election and electoral environment was the main topic of our meeting, and we received assurances that the U.S. will do everything possible to ensure democratic elections in Georgia," he said.

Alasaniya has already stated that he intends to change the power in Georgia through the election. Georgia will hold the parliamentary elections in 2012 and presidential elections - in 2013.
