The Caspian Sea is the most important strategic region, and establishing effective cooperation here meets long-term interests of all five littoral states, the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov, who met his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev the day before, said.

The Caspian Sea is bordered by five countries, Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. Meeting of heads of the two countries - Turkmenistan and Russia was held in the Caspian city of Turkmenbashi.

"Turkmenistan's approach based on principle lies in the fact that all issues concerning the legal status and vital activity in the Caspian Sea should be resolved by the littoral states based on universally recognized norms of international law, taking into account the interests of each other, based on principles of equality and mutual respect," Berdimuhammadov said.
