UN has supported Turkmen government’s activities aimed at fulfilling obligations in accordance with basic international human rights conventions, the UNDP Resident Representative, Lenni Montiel said in his address.

UN has supported Turkmen government's activities aimed at fulfilling obligations in accordance with basic international human rights conventions, the UNDP Resident Representative, Lenni Montiel said in his address.

"In this regard, we initiated a project in partnership with the European Union, which focuses on strengthening Turkmenistan's national potential to promote and protect human rights in the country," he said.

The UN "family" is represented in Turkmenistan by six accredited agencies. They are: the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN Population Fund, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund - UNICEF, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), World Health Organization. Representative offices of the World Bank and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) operate in Turkmenistan as UN affiliated agencies.

"In this regard, I would like to welcome the government's decision to expand cooperation with other UN affiliated international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, as well as regional development banks, such as the Asian, European and Islamic Development Bank," Montiel stressed.
