Registration of candidates to local authorities - members of the provincial (regional), etrap (district) and town people's councils started in Turkmenistan on Tuesday, the Central Election Commission of the country reported.
Elections are scheduled for Dec. 5, 2010. Turkmenistan has recently adopted a law on elections of members of the people's councils, which sets out the safeguards to ensure the free expression of citizens of Turkmenistan in the elections.
The country's Constitution states that local government consists of representative and executive bodies that act within their competence.
Turkmenistan realizes a project on strengthening the electoral system and processes in Turkmenistan with the participation of the UN Development Program (UNDP).
