The Iranian Consulate General opened on Europe Square in Batumi today. The opening ceremony was attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

"This is a particularly important event," Mottaki said. "It is very important that the consulate resumes work after such a long-term pause in Adjara. We consider this to be a historic event."

According to the FM, the opening of the consulate will significantly contribute to the deepening of multilateral relations between the countries.

Speaking at the ceremony, head of Adjara Levan Varshalomidze recalled that the Iranian Consulate General in Batumi functioned from 1883 to 1927.

"We are very glad on this occasion, as the consulate general's opening will establish close relations with Iran and attract Iranian tourists," he said.

Today Mottaki will hold talks with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
