U.S. observes the Azerbaijani parliamentary elections with great interest, Adam Stirling, the U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Azerbaijan told reporters today in Baku.

U.S. observes the Azerbaijani parliamentary elections with great interest, Adam Stirling, the U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Azerbaijan told reporters today in Baku.

"Some 31 embassy employees are observing the elections in Baku and the country's regions. At the same time, 45 U.S. citizens enter the OSCE / ODIHR Mission," Stirling said.

According to Stirling, the U.S. State Department is expected to publish statement tomorrow based on results of election monitoring held by the American mission.

Adam Sterling said, The U.S. Government believes that Azerbaijan's long term stability and prosperity, and our ability to deepen the U.S.-Azerbaijan relationship, will be best guaranteed by democratic and economic reform in Azerbaijan." 

Azerbaijan has today launched the parliamentary elections at 08:00 local time.

The Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC) reported that 690 candidates are running for parliamentary elections.

Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies. Previous parliamentary elections were held in November 2005.
