A delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross' (ICRC) regional representation arrived in Ashgabat this week, local media reported.

Priority aspects for further cooperation between Turkmenistan and the ICRC were discussed during a reception in parliament. The sides called for an intensification of effective dialogue, the Vatan newspaper reported.

During the visit, the ICRC representatives delivered lectures at the Turkmen Presidential Academy of State Service and the country's Institute of International Relations. A number of meetings have also been scheduled at the Foreign Ministry and several other ministries and agencies.

The ICRC is coordinating the efforts of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to provide humanitarian assistance and spread knowledge about international humanitarian law. In Ashgabat, the ICRC is working on practical measures to implement international humanitarian law into Turkmen national legislation.

Turkmenistan, which has acceded to most international treaties, has ratified a total of 118 conventions. Head of the Regional Delegation for Central Asia Yves Arnoldi visited the city in October.
