Media: OSCE/ODIHR delegation visits Ashgabat

The issues related to optimizing the activity of local government bodies and election campaigns were put on the agenda of a meeting at the Mejlis of Turkmenistan with a delegation of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), who was on a visit in Ashgabat.

The issues related to optimizing the activity of local government bodies and election campaigns were put on the agenda of a meeting at the Mejlis of Turkmenistan with a delegation of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), who was on a visit in Ashgabat. The delegation is led by Mr. Jonathan Stonestreet, Head of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission, local media reported.

A focus of a lively discussion was the promising vectors of cooperation in the context of large-scale reforms launched in the country particularly to strengthen the democratic foundations of the state and society. In this regard, the guests were briefed on electoral laws of Turkmenistan, which reflected the basic principles of international norms in this area. Reaffirming that Turkmenistan and the OSCE stood ready to develop a constructive dialogue, the participants discussed the aspects of further cooperation in the framework of ongoing and future joint projects and programmes.

During the visit to Ashgabat the OSCE/ODIHR delegation was received at the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda in Turkmenistan, where an exchange of views on key aspects of cooperation in this area took place.
