Although Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi said on Monday that Libya is on the verge of civil war, Swedish Middle East expert of Arab origin Nasser Al-Ghazali believes that a civil war does not threaten Libya.

"Demonstrations in Libya will not lead to civil war, as the Libyan authorities will not allow their expansion," Al-Ghazali told Trend over the telephone from Stockholm.

Protest actions in the Libyan provinces demanding Gaddafi's resignation and all senior officials have been continuing since Feb. 15. The country's authorities suppressed the demonstration.

During the suppression of mass demonstrations in the Libyan city of Benghazi, 233 people were killed, while more than 800 people were injured. Officially, authorities confirm the death of only 84 persons.

The impetus for the demonstrations in Libya was the development in the neighboring Arab countries. Demonstrations and rallies led to a power change in Egypt and Tunisia.

Al-Ghazali believes that most of the demonstrators in Libya are emigrants from other Arab countries, but not native Libyans.

"Most of the Libyans support Gaddafi's rule, while emigrants from other countries are against him," he added.

Al-Ghazali also believes that overthrowing Gaddafi will not be easy, since he will not allow the expansion of the demonstrations.

"Gaddafi will not leave power, he has many years of political experience," the expert said.

Al-Ghazali said that these demonstrations will force Gaddafi to hold a series of reforms aimed at meeting the people's demands.
