Minister: Turkey seeks to strengthen cooperation with Azerbaijan in defense industry field

Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul stressed that the Turkey -Azerbaijan cooperation in the defense industry field is not done on a proper level and Turkey wants to strengthen this cooperation.
Turkey is ready to meet Azerbaijan's needs in the products of the defense industry and military uniforms at the most reasonable terms, as well as participate in joint production and transfer of the technology, Gonul said in an interview with Trend.
Gonul said it is important that the good Turkey- Azerbaijan relations affected the cooperation in the defense industry.
"Today, the Turkey -Azerbaijan cooperation in the defense industry field occupies a special place in the relations between the two countries as before. The relevant companies carry out meetings and negotiations within the framework of this cooperation in accordance with the international agreements and restrictions," Gonul said.
He added that an agreement on strategic partnership and mutual assistance between Azerbaijan and Turkey signed on August 16, 2010 will significantly contribute to the development of the cooperation in defense industry.
The two countries signed a relevant agreement on Sept. 20, 2000 to implement cooperation in the defense industry on the legal basis, Gonul said.
Azerbaijan registered the Baku office of the Turkish company ASELSAN in 1998, whose main activity is marketing, sales and after-sales service of high-tech communications systems, which are products of the parent company.
Azerbaijan and Turkey signed an agreement on joint production of jet missiles in the framework of the international exhibition "IDEX -2011" held in Abu Dhabi in February. Based on the document, the Azerbaijani Defense Industry Ministry and the Turkish company ROKETSAN start producing 107 - and 120-millimeter rocket-propelled missiles.
