Shevardnadze: Medvedev, Saakashvili to sit down to eventual talks

Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug.8 / Trend, N. Kirtskhalia /

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will begin a dialogue with his Georgian counterpart, Mikheil Saakashvili. Though not soon, said former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze to Georgian "Asaval-Dasavali" weekly, commenting on the statement by Georgia's presidential Spokesperson Manana Manjgaladze, that Georgia is ready for civilized and friendly relations with Russia.

"Of course, Moscow will not wait for Saakashvili's arrival with a red carpet. But contacts and negotiations will be negotiated, as Saakashvili is not going to anywhere and restoration of intergovernmental relations without contacting the president does not happen", Shevardnadze said.

Commenting on Medvedev's statement to convene an international tribunal for Saakashvili's actions, Shevardnadze said that Russia's president should not make such decisions.
"History will cross the t's and dot the i's," he said.

Military actions were launched in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia in August 2008. Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, and later Russian troops occupied the city and drove the Georgian military back to Georgia. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Aug. 26 and established diplomatic relations with them on Sept. 9, 2008.
