Medvedev urges Caspian states to jointly protect sturgeon

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has urged the Caspian states to implement their decision on the moratorium on sturgeon fishing and take coordinated measures on reproduction of valuable fish species.

"We need to establish full-value cooperation with our neighbors. First, we must implement the decision on the moratorium, which was actually taken by us and which, unfortunately, has not been fulfilled because of absence of a complete agreement.

If we do this, we can proceed to the next stage of cooperation - the distribution of quotas to restore the total number," Medvedev said on Wednesday at the Astrakhan meeting on development of water resources of the Volga, RIA Novosti reported.

"We have heard different figures. I do not know how much it needs, but the specialists should answer it. But I believe that leading powers of Caspian are quite able to assume quotas," said the President.

He said it needs to deal not only with sturgeon, but also other species of fish.
