Azerbaijani diplomat: Appointment of second CE rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan is not objective

Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 26 / Trend T.Hajiyev /

Appointing an additional Council of Europe rapporteur to handle political prisoners in Azerbaijan is far from objectivity, head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, MP Samad Seyidov told reporters on Thursday.

"I believe that appointing new speakers or some other authorized persons on Azerbaijan is unfounded. There are already two Monitoring Committee rapporteurs in Azerbaijan", Seyidov added, noting that the country works with them in a constructive manner.

"These rapporteurs are very critical-minded, but they have been assigned by the Council of Europe's Monitoring Committee, and we are members of this committee. We work with these speakers. Appointment of any additional rapporteurs, supposedly for political prisoners, is biased. The issues of human rights in Karabakh and the rule of law and democracy are in the authority of co-rapporteurs, appointed by the Monitoring Committee", Seyidov said.

He believes that further discussions of the same issues demonstrate a biased approach that is far from constructive.
"We will never accept the fact that this approach resulted in the application of double standards", he said.

Samedov said Azerbaijan cooperates with the Council of Europe on human rights, and that work continues successfully.
