Iran and Afghanistan have stressed the importance of bolstering mutual relations with the purpose of enhancing understanding and convergence among regional countries to thwart the enemy's plots, Press TV reported.

In a telephone conversation with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai Monday night, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on regional nations to keep vigilant against the enemy's ploys.

He added that constant consultations between Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan will play an effective role in this regard, IRNA reported.

The Iranian chief executive also condemned the assassination of the chairman of Afghanistan's Peace Council, Burhanuddin Rabbani.

Rabbani's assassination proved that the enemy is against a peaceful atmosphere in the region and the improvement of understanding and convergence in Afghanistan, he stated.

Former Afghan President Rabbani was killed September 20 during a meeting with Taliban militants at his house in Kabul.

A militant, who had reportedly hidden explosives in his turban, blew himself up during the meeting.

The Afghan president, for his part, said Kabul always supports the establishment of sustainable peace and security in the region as it serves the interests of all regional nations.

Karzai stressed that trilateral meetings between Tehran, Kabul and Islamabad will enhance friendship and cooperation in the region.
