Britain will work with the United States, the European Union and Saudi Arabia to agree on an international response to an alleged Iranian-backed plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington, Reuters quoted U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague on Thursday.
Hague told parliament the alleged plot "would appear to constitute a major escalation in Iran's sponsorship of terrorism outside its borders".
"We are in close touch with the United States' authorities and will work to agree an international response along with the United States, the rest of the European Union and Saudi Arabia," he said.
On Wednesday U.S. federal prosecutors in New York have charged two Iranians with plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S., Adel Al-Jubeir.
U.S. Attorney-General Eric Holder said on Wednesday the plot was masterminded, sponsored and directed from Iran, but declined to disclose details of the conspiracy and confirm that it was approved and ordered directly by Iranian authorities.
Iran rejected the accusation, saying this is U.S. diversionary tactic.
