Cooperation in energy and transport sectors discussed at Brussels meeting

The 12th meeting of the council on cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan was held in Brussels. A delegation headed by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov attended the meeting.

The 12th meeting of the council on cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan was held in Brussels. A delegation headed by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov attended the meeting.

The EU was represented by Polish Secretary of State for European Affairs Mikołaj Dowgielewicz and European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Trend on Friday.

Azerbaijan chaired the meeting.

Mammadyarov informed the European side about the negotiation process to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He emphasized the importance of its settlement within the territorial integrity and respect for the sovereignty of countries. The EU role in this process was also discussed.

The activity and future cooperation in the format of "European Neighborhood Policy" and "Eastern Partnership" were discussed. Welcoming the progress achieved during the negotiations on the association agreement between Azerbaijan and the EU, the sides stressed the importance of continuing the discussions.

The two sides also discussed the cooperation in energy and transport sectors. They highlighted Azerbaijan's leading in the implementation of the "Southern Gas Corridor" project. The sides exchanged views on prospects for a strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the EU in other areas of bilateral cooperation. The sides discussed the political dialogue and other urgent issues.

A joint working dinner was held after the meeting. The two sides discussed various issues including the development of bilateral relations, the cooperation within the "Eastern Partnership" and the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
